The Graveyard Shift

Written in October of 1990 in Barrhead, Alberta

The weather man says “Today’s the day that we’ve been waiting for.
The year’s first snowfall is gonna cover us all like a rug on a floor”
People for miles around are bundling up tonight
And me I sit here all alone
And wonder where oh where you are tonight

Now Daisy works at the corner store just up the block
She works the graveyard shift
So some nights, I go up there and we talk
She says “Man, this job is killing me
And someday I think I’ll just leave it all”
I say “Daisy I know where you’re coming from
And someday your Romeo will come along”

I picture in my head a sunny day
When you were here with me
I hear all those words that I long to say
If you were only here with me

Take me away

The snow is falling lightly on our ragged old town
Daisy looks really impressed
As we sit and watch the snow come on down
It’s 3 o’clock in the morning
And I’m sitting here yawning half asleep
I wonder where you are tonight
And why oh why your not right here with me

I picture in my head a sunny day
When you were here with me
I hear all those words that I long to say
If you were only here with me
